From the Guidelines
Eyelash extensions may be considered for medical reasons in individuals with alopecia, chemotherapy-induced eyelash loss, or other conditions causing eyelash thinning or loss, as they can help improve quality of life and self-esteem. When considering medical reasons for eyelash extensions, it's essential to weigh the potential benefits against the risks, such as allergic reactions to adhesives or traction alopecia. Some medical conditions that may benefit from eyelash extensions include:
- Alopecia areata, where eyelash loss can be a significant concern [ 1 ]
- Chemotherapy-induced eyelash loss, where eyelash extensions can help restore a sense of normalcy [ 1 ]
- Trichotillomania, a hair-pulling disorder that can cause eyelash loss
- Thyroid disorders that cause hair thinning, including eyelash loss
- Genetic factors or aging that result in sparse or inadequate natural lashes
- Burn victims or those with facial scarring, where eyelash extensions can be part of physical and psychological rehabilitation It's crucial to consult with a dermatologist or ophthalmologist and a licensed esthetician to ensure that eyelash extensions are a suitable option and won't exacerbate existing conditions. Additionally, alternative treatments for eyelash growth, such as bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, may be considered, but their use is not generally recommended due to limited evidence [ 1 ]. Ultimately, the decision to use eyelash extensions for medical reasons should be made on a case-by-case basis, prioritizing the individual's quality of life and potential risks.
