Medications for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

The following medications are used to manage ALS:

  • Riluzole: a neuroprotective agent that reduces damage to motor neurons by inhibiting glutamate release 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Edaravone: a neuroprotective agent that prevents oxidative stress damage as a free radical scavenger 2, 6, 3, 4
  • Sodium phenylbutyrate and taurursodiol (PB/TURSO): a disease-modifying treatment that slows progression of ALS 6, 3
