What is Enlyte?
Enlyte is a prescription-only medical food softgel capsule specifically formulated for patients with MTHFR gene polymorphisms (SNPs) and methylation coenzyme cofactor deficiencies to assist in the clinical dietary management of depression. 1
Formulation and Active Components
Enlyte contains a specialized combination of reduced B vitamins designed for patients with impaired methylation capacity:
- 50 mcg adenosylcobalamin (active form of vitamin B12)
- 15 mg DFE of reduced folates from three sources:
- 7 mg L-methylfolate magnesium
- 2.5 mg folinic acid
- 1 mg folic acid
The formulation also includes additional cofactors such as phosphatidylserine-DHA complex, CoQ10, NADH, FAD, pyridoxal 5' phosphate (active B6), thiamine pyrophosphate (active B1), and other supportive nutrients. 1
Clinical Indication and Mechanism
This medical food addresses a specific metabolic need: patients with MTHFR polymorphisms have impaired ability to convert standard folic acid into its active methylated forms. Enlyte provides pre-methylated, bioavailable forms of folate and B12 that bypass this metabolic block, allowing these patients to maintain adequate methylation capacity for neurotransmitter synthesis and homocysteine metabolism. 1
Clinical trial data (NCT02709668) demonstrated that Enlyte effectively lowers homocysteine levels in MTHFR-positive patients with major depressive disorder. 1
Dosing and Administration
The standard dose is one softgel capsule daily, with or without food, under medical supervision. There are no age restrictions. 1
Important Caveats
- This is a medical food, not a drug—it requires medical supervision and is intended for patients with documented limited capacity to metabolize ordinary nutrients
- Contains fish/krill/soy allergens
- Must be kept out of reach of children
- Should not exceed recommended dose 1
Medical foods like Enlyte are specifically designed for patients whose distinctive nutritional requirements cannot be met through normal diet modification alone, distinguishing them from standard dietary supplements. 1
