From the FDA Drug Label

In uncomplicated urinary tract infections, skin and skin-structure infections, disseminated gonococcal infections, and uncomplicated pneumonia, a 750 mg dose every 8 hours is recommended. The recommended dose and frequency of Ceftin (cefuroxime) for a urinary tract infection (UTI) is 750 mg every 8 hours.

  • The duration of treatment is usually 5 to 10 days.
  • In cases of impaired renal function, the dosage should be adjusted according to the degree of renal impairment and the susceptibility of the causative organism 1.

From the Research

Ceftin (cefuroxime) is typically prescribed for urinary tract infections at a dose of 250-500 mg taken orally twice daily for 7-10 days, with the most recent and highest quality study 2 suggesting that twice-daily dosing is as effective as four-times-daily dosing for the treatment of UTIs. For uncomplicated UTIs, the 250 mg dose is often sufficient, while more severe or complicated infections may require the higher 500 mg dose. The medication should be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce stomach upset. Patients should complete the entire prescribed course even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication to ensure complete eradication of the infection. Ceftin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively killing the bacteria causing the UTI. Some key points to consider when prescribing Ceftin for UTIs include:

  • The importance of drinking plenty of water to help flush the urinary system 3
  • The potential for common side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and headache 4
  • The need for patients with kidney problems to have their dosage adjusted accordingly 5
  • The importance of consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized dosing recommendations based on the patient's specific condition and medical history 6 It's also worth noting that the treatment of UTIs should be guided by the most recent and highest quality evidence, and that Ceftin is just one of many potential treatment options available 2.
