While some research suggests potential overlaps between PCOS and certain neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD, the relationship is complex and not fully understood 1. PCOS is primarily caused by hormonal imbalances involving insulin resistance and elevated androgens (including testosterone), which can actually worsen sleep quality rather than improve it. Key factors to consider in the management of PCOS include:
- Insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, which contribute to hyperandrogenism 1
- The importance of lifestyle modifications, including diet and exercise, in managing PCOS symptoms 1
- The potential benefits of pharmacological agents, such as metformin and anti-obesity medications, in improving hormonal, reproductive, and metabolic outcomes in PCOS patients 1 Sleep disorders in neurodivergent individuals typically stem from different neurobiological mechanisms related to circadian rhythm regulation, sensory processing, and neurotransmitter function.
