Smallest Wellbutrin Extended-Release Dose
The smallest commercially available dose of extended-release Wellbutrin (bupropion XL) is 150 mg once daily. 1
Available Formulations
According to FDA labeling, Wellbutrin XL (bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets) comes in two strengths 1:
- 150 mg tablets (creamy white to pale yellow round tablets)
- 300 mg tablets (creamy white to pale yellow round tablets)
Clinical Dosing Context
The 150 mg dose serves multiple purposes across different clinical applications:
For Depression (ADHD/Off-label Use)
- Starting dose: 150 mg once daily in the morning 2
- Maintenance dose: 150-300 mg once daily 2
- Maximum dose: 450 mg per day 2
For Smoking Cessation
Multiple guidelines consistently recommend 3, 4, 5:
- Days 1-3: 150 mg once daily (morning)
- Day 4 onward: 150 mg twice daily if tolerated
- Maximum: 300 mg per day
The initial 150 mg once-daily dosing for 3 days allows assessment of tolerability before escalation, particularly important given seizure risk considerations.
For Weight Management (Combination Product)
When bupropion is combined with naltrexone (Contrave), each tablet contains only 90 mg bupropion 6, 7, but this is a different formulation (sustained-release) and not pure Wellbutrin XL.
Important Clinical Considerations
Seizure risk is dose-dependent and represents the primary safety concern limiting lower doses. The 150 mg starting dose balances efficacy with seizure threshold concerns 4.
Contraindications for any dose include 4:
- Seizure disorders or conditions increasing seizure risk (stroke, brain metastases)
- Concurrent MAO inhibitor use
- Eating disorders
- Abrupt discontinuation of alcohol or sedatives
No lower dose exists for Wellbutrin XL because 150 mg once daily represents the minimum effective dose established in clinical trials while maintaining an acceptable safety profile.
