From the FDA Drug Label

Ciprofloxacin otic solution, 0.2% is supplied as a 0.2% otic solution in a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) single-dose container. Each single-dose container delivers 0. 25 mL of solution equivalent to 0.5 mg of ciprofloxacin; Ciprofloxacin otic solution, 0.2% should be given 2 times each day (about 12 hours apart) in each infected ear.

The dose of Ciprodex otic is 0.5 mg of ciprofloxacin per dose, administered twice daily (about 12 hours apart) in each infected ear 1 1.

From the Research

The standard dose of Ciprodex otic suspension (containing ciprofloxacin 0.3% and dexamethasone 0.1%) for both adults and children is 4 drops instilled into the affected ear(s) twice daily for 7 days. This dosage is based on the most recent and highest quality study available, which demonstrates the efficacy and safety of Ciprodex in treating bacterial ear infections with inflammation 2. Before administration, the bottle should be warmed in your hands for 1-2 minutes and shaken well. The patient should lie with the affected ear upward, and after instilling the drops, remain in this position for 30-60 seconds to allow the medication to penetrate the ear canal. For children, gently pulling the outer ear outward and upward helps straighten the ear canal for better medication delivery, while for adults, pulling the outer ear upward and backward is recommended. Ciprodex combines an antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) that kills bacteria and a steroid (dexamethasone) that reduces inflammation, making it effective for treating bacterial ear infections with inflammation. It's essential to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve before the 7 days are finished.

Some key points to consider when using Ciprodex otic suspension include:

  • The importance of completing the full 7-day course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before completion 3
  • The potential for Ciprodex to provide faster relief from symptoms and improved clinical outcomes compared to other treatments 4
  • The safety and efficacy of Ciprodex in pediatric patients, as demonstrated in studies such as 5
  • The potential benefits of combining an antibiotic with a steroid, such as ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone, in treating bacterial ear infections with inflammation 6

Overall, the standard dose of 4 drops of Ciprodex otic suspension twice daily for 7 days is a well-established and effective treatment for bacterial ear infections with inflammation, and should be used in accordance with the recommended guidelines and precautions.
