From the Research
Buspirone is not associated with significant weight gain and may even induce weight loss in some cases, making it a favorable option for patients concerned about weight gain while managing anxiety. This is based on the most recent and highest quality study available, which found that buspirone induces weight loss and normalization of blood pressure via the stimulation of PPARδ dependent energy producing pathway in spontaneously hypertensive rats 1. The study demonstrated that buspirone treatment resulted in decreased body weight and abdominal fat weight, as well as improved lipid metabolism and blood pressure control. Key findings from the study include:
- Decreased body weight and abdominal fat weight in spontaneously hypertensive rats treated with buspirone
- Improved lipid metabolism, including decreased triglyceride levels and increased HDL-cholesterol concentration
- Normalization of blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats treated with buspirone
- Activation of PPARδ dependent catabolic metabolism producing energy, leading to improved lipid metabolism and weight loss Other studies have also supported the weight-neutral or weight-loss effects of buspirone, although they may not be as directly relevant to the question of weight gain 2, 3, 4, 5. Overall, the evidence suggests that buspirone is a good option for patients who are concerned about weight gain while managing anxiety, although individual responses may vary and other side effects should be considered.
