Clinical Context
Methylnaltrexone (Relistor) is a peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist (PAMORA) approved for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in patients with advanced illness receiving palliative care when response to laxative therapy has been insufficient 2, 3. As a quaternary amine, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing it to reverse peripheral opioid effects in the gastrointestinal tract while preserving central analgesic effects 1, 4, 5.
