Management of SYRF Ingestion
If SYRF ingestion has occurred, immediately contact Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) or seek emergency medical care, and do NOT induce vomiting or administer anything by mouth unless specifically directed by poison control or emergency personnel. 1, 2
Immediate Actions
Step 1: Assess the Situation
- Identify the product: SYRF contains sodium monofluorophosphate (0.76% with 0.15% w/v fluoride ion) 2 or may be a flammable external-use product 2
- Determine quantity ingested and time of ingestion
- Evaluate for symptoms: sleepiness, seizures, difficulty breathing, vomiting, irritation, or rash 1, 2
Step 2: Contact Emergency Services
- Activate EMS immediately if any life-threatening symptoms are present 1
- Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) with the product name, time of exposure, and amount ingested 1
- For children under 6 years who swallow more than the amount used for brushing, get medical help immediately 2
Step 3: What NOT to Do
Do not administer milk or water - There is insufficient evidence that dilution helps, and it may cause vomiting and aspiration (Class III, LOE C) 1
Do not give activated charcoal unless specifically instructed by poison control (Class IIb, LOE C) - It has not been shown to be beneficial in first aid settings and may cause harm 1
Do not induce vomiting with ipecac (Class III, LOE B) - This provides no clinical benefit and causes intractable vomiting and delays definitive care 1
Special Considerations
For Fluoride-Containing Products
If the SYRF product contains fluoride 2:
- Fluoride toxicity can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, electrolyte abnormalities, and cardiac effects
- Medical evaluation is critical for determining need for supportive care
- Calcium administration may be considered in severe cases, though this requires medical supervision
For External-Use Flammable Products
If the ingested SYRF is the flammable external-use formulation 2:
- Risk of chemical injury to gastrointestinal tract
- Do not attempt gastric decontamination - this may worsen injury
- Immediate medical evaluation required
Hospital Management (If Required)
Once in medical care, management follows standard poisoning protocols:
- Supportive care is the cornerstone of treatment 1
- Monitor vital signs and assess for systemic toxicity
- Laboratory evaluation as clinically indicated
- Observation period determined by poison control or treating physician based on amount ingested and symptoms
Key Pitfalls to Avoid
- Never delay calling for help while attempting home remedies
- Do not assume small amounts are safe - children under 6 are particularly vulnerable 2
- Avoid eye contact if handling the product during cleanup 2
- Keep the product container to show medical personnel or poison control
The evidence strongly supports immediate professional consultation rather than home management for any concerning ingestion, as the specific formulation and amount determine appropriate care.
