Nabothian Cysts Do Not Cause Miscarriages
Nabothian cysts are benign cervical retention cysts that do not cause miscarriages. There is no evidence in the medical literature linking nabothian cysts to pregnancy loss or miscarriage.
What Nabothian Cysts Are
Nabothian cysts are common, benign cervical lesions that occur when mucous glands in the cervix become obstructed. They are:
- Typically 2-10 mm in diameter
- Usually asymptomatic and require no intervention
- Found incidentally during routine gynecologic examinations
- Not associated with pregnancy complications or miscarriage 1
Clinical Implications During Pregnancy
While nabothian cysts themselves do not cause miscarriages, the available evidence shows they can occasionally present mechanical challenges during pregnancy:
- Labor obstruction: In extremely rare cases, giant nabothian cysts (>4 cm) can physically obstruct the birth canal during labor, though this does not affect pregnancy viability or cause miscarriage 2
- Fertility concerns: Some evidence suggests very large cysts might interfere with conception by obstructing the cervical canal, but this relates to achieving pregnancy, not maintaining it 1
Important Diagnostic Caveat
The critical clinical concern is not the nabothian cyst itself, but ensuring it is truly benign. Cervical adenocarcinoma can occasionally be misdiagnosed as a nabothian cyst during pregnancy 3. If you have:
- Atypical cytology on Pap smear
- High-risk HPV positivity (especially HPV 18)
- Any suspicious features on imaging
You must pursue colposcopic biopsy despite pregnancy to rule out malignancy 3.
Bottom Line
Nabothian cysts are incidental benign findings that do not cause miscarriages. If you are experiencing pregnancy loss, the cause lies elsewhere and requires appropriate evaluation for actual causes of first-trimester bleeding and miscarriage, such as ectopic pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease, or other pregnancy complications 4.
