From the Research
To decrease the risk and frequency of acute gout attacks, patients should stay well hydrated by consuming water, limit daily consumption of sweetened soda, reserve alcohol to only an occasional drink, and increase daily intake of vegetables. The most recent and highest quality study 1 supports the importance of dietary adjustments in managing gout. Some key adjustments include:
- Staying well hydrated primarily by consuming water, as this helps dilute uric acid and promotes its excretion through the kidneys 2
- Limiting daily consumption of sweetened soda, as sugary beverages and foods with high-fructose corn syrup can increase uric acid production 3
- Reserving alcohol to only an occasional drink, particularly beer which contains purines and can increase uric acid production while decreasing excretion 4
- Increasing daily intake of vegetables, as a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and limited red meat can reduce inflammation and gout risk 5 It is also important to note that severely limiting dairy consumption is not recommended, as low-fat dairy products may have protective effects against gout attacks 3. Overall, these dietary changes can help reduce uric acid production, enhance its excretion, or decrease inflammation that contributes to gout attacks.
