From the Guidelines
Penile candidiasis symptoms include redness, itching, burning, and a rash on the penis, often with white patches or discharge, and treatment typically involves antifungal medications such as clotrimazole or miconazole creams applied twice daily for 7-14 days. The rash associated with penile candidiasis can manifest as erythematous areas on the glans of the penis, accompanied by pruritus or irritation, as noted in the guidelines for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases 1. Small red spots or a dry, flaky appearance may also occur, particularly on the glans (head) of the penis.
Symptoms and Treatment
- Redness, itching, burning, and a rash on the penis
- White patches or discharge may be present
- Small red spots or a dry, flaky appearance, particularly on the glans (head) of the penis
- Treatment: antifungal medications such as clotrimazole (Lotrimin) or miconazole (Monistat) creams applied twice daily for 7-14 days
- For more severe infections, oral fluconazole (Diflucan) 150mg as a single dose may be prescribed
- While treating the infection, keep the area clean and dry, avoid scented soaps, wear loose cotton underwear, and abstain from sexual activity or use condoms until the infection clears
Prevention and Complications
- Partners should be treated if they show symptoms, as a minority of male sex partners may have balanitis, which can be relieved with topical antifungal agents 1
- These infections occur when Candida yeast, normally present on skin, overgrows due to factors like antibiotic use, diabetes, poor hygiene, or a weakened immune system
- If symptoms persist after treatment, recur frequently, or are accompanied by fever or discharge, medical evaluation is necessary as these could indicate a different condition or complication
From the Research
Symptoms of Penile Candidiasis (Yeast Infection) Rash
- The symptoms of penile candidiasis can include a red, itchy rash on the penis, which may be accompanied by a white, cheesy discharge 2
- The rash may be painful and can cause discomfort during urination or sexual activity
- In some cases, the rash may spread to other areas of the body, such as the groin or thighs
Treatment of Penile Candidiasis (Yeast Infection) Rash
- Topical antifungal creams or ointments, such as clotrimazole or miconazole, are commonly used to treat penile candidiasis 3, 2
- These creams or ointments work by killing the fungus that causes the infection or preventing it from growing and spreading
- In some cases, oral antifungal medications, such as fluconazole, may be prescribed to treat more severe or recurrent infections 2, 4
- It is essential to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication, to ensure that the infection is fully cleared
Prevention of Penile Candidiasis (Yeast Infection) Rash
- Practicing good hygiene, such as washing the penis and surrounding area regularly, can help prevent the spread of the infection
- Avoiding tight-fitting clothing and using breathable fabrics can also help reduce the risk of developing penile candidiasis
- Avoiding sexual contact with someone who has a yeast infection can also help prevent the spread of the infection
