From the Research
After pilonidal cyst surgery, patients should keep the surgical site clean and dry, changing dressings as instructed by their surgeon, and avoid strenuous activities for 2-4 weeks to promote proper wound healing and reduce the risk of complications. The most recent and highest quality study on this topic is from 2022, which found that application of honey after resection surgery with secondary wound healing is associated with a better surgical outcome, decreasing healing time and reducing duration of return to normal activities 1. However, this study also found that honey application could increase post-operation pain and analgesic consumption. Some key points to consider after pilonidal cyst surgery include:
- Keeping the surgical site clean and dry, changing dressings as instructed by the surgeon (typically 1-3 times daily)
- Managing pain with prescribed medications like acetaminophen or NSAIDs, and sometimes opioids for severe pain
- Avoiding sitting directly on the surgical site for 1-2 weeks and instead using a donut cushion or lying on their side
- Avoiding strenuous activities, heavy lifting (over 10 pounds), and exercise for 2-4 weeks
- Taking sitz baths (warm water soaks) for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times daily, to promote healing and comfort
- Maintaining a high-fiber diet and adequate fluid intake to prevent constipation, which could strain the surgical area
- Watching for signs of infection, including increased pain, redness, swelling, foul odor, or fever above 101°F Most patients can return to work within 2-4 weeks, depending on their occupation, and complete healing may take 4-8 weeks, with follow-up appointments crucial to monitor recovery 2, 3, 4, 5.
