From the FDA Drug Label
Store your pen in use for 56 days at room temperature between 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C) or in a refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) The OZEMPIC pen you are using should be disposed of (thrown away) after 56 days, even if it still has OZEMPIC left in it.
You can use the Ozempic pen for 56 days after first use, as long as it is stored properly at room temperature or in the refrigerator. After 56 days, the pen should be disposed of, even if it still contains Ozempic. 1
From the Research
After first use, an Ozempic (semaglutide) pen should be used for no more than 56 days (8 weeks), after which it should be discarded even if medication remains. The pen should be stored in the refrigerator (36°F to 46°F) before first use, but after the initial injection, you can either continue refrigerating it or keep it at room temperature (below 86°F) 2. Never freeze the pen, and always keep the cap on when not in use to protect it from light. The 56-day limit exists because the preservative effectiveness in the medication gradually decreases after the pen is opened, potentially compromising sterility and medication stability. Additionally, the pen should be inspected before each use to ensure the solution is clear and colorless; if it appears cloudy, discolored, or contains particles, do not use it. Remember to properly dispose of used pens in a sharps container, not in household trash. Some studies have shown the effectiveness of semaglutide in weight loss and glycemic control, but they do not provide information on the usage duration of the pen after first use 3, 4, 5, 6. However, the most important consideration is the stability and sterility of the medication, which is ensured for up to 56 days after the pen is opened. Therefore, it is crucial to follow the recommended usage duration to maintain the efficacy and safety of the medication. Key points to consider:
- Store the pen in the refrigerator before first use
- Keep the pen at room temperature (below 86°F) after first use
- Never freeze the pen
- Always keep the cap on when not in use
- Inspect the pen before each use
- Discard the pen after 56 days (8 weeks) or if medication remains
- Properly dispose of used pens in a sharps container.
