From the Research
Evening primrose oil (EPO) can help soften the cervix through its high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that influences prostaglandin production, which plays a key role in cervical ripening. The most recent and highest quality study, published in 2024 1, found that vaginal use of EPO significantly increased the Bishop score, a measure of cervical ripening, compared to a placebo group. This study suggests that EPO can be a safe and efficient approach for cervical ripening in low-risk term pregnant women. Key findings from this study include:
- The Bishop score was significantly higher in the EPO group compared to the placebo group after intervention
- The need for labor induction was significantly lower in the EPO group compared to the placebo group
- The study found no significant difference in the rate of cesarean sections between the two groups. It is essential to note that while EPO is considered generally safe, women should consult their healthcare provider before using it, especially if they have any underlying medical conditions or are taking medications that may interact with EPO. In terms of dosage, the 2024 study used 1000mg vaginal EPO capsules, which may be an effective dose for cervical ripening. However, more research is needed to confirm the optimal dosage and administration route for EPO. Overall, the current evidence suggests that EPO may be a useful adjunct for cervical ripening, but its use should be individualized and monitored by a healthcare provider.
