From the Research
L-tyrosine supplementation is recommended for cognitive benefits and stress management, with a typical dosage of 500-1,000 mg daily, taken 30-60 minutes before stressful activities or in the morning on an empty stomach. The evidence suggests that L-tyrosine may be beneficial for cognitive performance, particularly in short-term stressful and/or cognitively demanding situations 2. However, the effectiveness of L-tyrosine supplementation for physical exercise is minimal 3, 2. It is essential to note that L-tyrosine should be taken separately from high-protein meals and medications like levodopa or thyroid hormones, as it may interfere with their absorption.
Some key points to consider when taking L-tyrosine supplements include:
- Starting with a low dose of 500-1,000 mg daily and adjusting as needed
- Taking L-tyrosine 30-60 minutes before stressful activities or in the morning on an empty stomach
- Avoiding high-protein meals and certain medications when taking L-tyrosine
- Potential side effects, such as nausea, headache, fatigue, and heartburn
- Consulting with a healthcare provider before starting any supplement regimen, especially if you have existing health conditions or take other medications
It is also important to note that people with hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, melanoma, or those taking MAOIs or thyroid medications should avoid L-tyrosine supplements 3, 2. Additionally, the evidence suggests that L-tyrosine supplementation may have a neuroprotective effect, particularly when combined with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation 4. However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of L-tyrosine supplementation on human health.
