How to Remove Adhesive from Eyelashes

To safely remove glue from eyelashes, apply warm compresses to soften the adhesive, followed by gentle cleansing with diluted baby shampoo or a commercial eyelid cleaner. 1

Safe Removal Procedure

  1. Apply warm compresses:

    • Place a clean washcloth under warm water
    • Hold against closed eyelids for several minutes
    • This softens the adhesive and makes removal easier 1
  2. Gentle cleansing options:

    • Use diluted baby shampoo on a cotton swab or pad
    • Apply commercially available eyelid cleaner
    • Consider eye cleaners with 0.01% hypochlorous acid which have antimicrobial properties 1
  3. Removal technique:

    • Gently rub at the base of eyelashes where the glue is attached
    • Move in a side-to-side motion to loosen adhesive
    • For stubborn glue, trim affected eyelashes with blunt-tip scissors 1

Special Considerations

For Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) Adhesions

If eyelids are stuck together due to superglue:

  • A medical professional may need to use a Jameson muscle hook to separate adhesions 2
  • Do NOT attempt to forcibly open eyelids as this may damage the cornea
  • Seek immediate medical attention if eyelids are completely sealed 3

For Eyelash Extension Adhesive

  • Be aware that some eyelash extension glues contain formaldehyde and other potential allergens 4
  • If allergic reaction occurs (redness, swelling, itching), discontinue use immediately
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist 5

What NOT to Do

  • Avoid using acetone or oil-based products near the eyes 6
  • Do not use force to separate eyelashes or eyelids
  • Avoid using hot water that could burn the delicate skin around eyes 1

When to Seek Medical Help

  • If you experience pain, redness, or vision changes
  • If eyelids are completely stuck together
  • If you cannot remove the adhesive with gentle methods
  • If you suspect corneal damage or chemical injury 4

Remember that proper eyelid hygiene is important not just for adhesive removal but also for preventing blepharitis and other eye conditions. When using eye cosmetics or adhesives, always be careful to avoid getting products directly in the eyes.
