From the Research
Robaxin (methocarbamol) is typically prescribed at a dose of 1500 mg four times daily for adults with muscle spasms. Treatment usually begins with this higher dose for the first 48-72 hours, after which it can be reduced to 750 mg every 4 hours or 1000 mg four times daily for maintenance therapy. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 8000 mg. For elderly patients or those with liver or kidney issues, lower doses may be appropriate. Robaxin works as a central muscle relaxant by depressing the central nervous system, though its exact mechanism isn't fully understood. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision, so patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them. Taking Robaxin with food can help reduce stomach upset. Patients should complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve, and should not abruptly stop taking the medication without consulting their healthcare provider. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it's almost time for the next dose.
Some key points to consider when prescribing Robaxin include:
- Starting with a higher dose for the first 48-72 hours to effectively manage muscle spasms
- Reducing the dose for maintenance therapy to minimize side effects
- Monitoring patients for common side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness
- Adjusting the dose for elderly patients or those with liver or kidney issues
- Ensuring patients complete the full prescribed course and do not abruptly stop taking the medication
It's worth noting that the provided evidence does not directly address the dosing of Robaxin, but rather discusses the efficacy and safety of other medications such as cyclobenzaprine and ropinirole 2, 3, 4. However, based on general medical knowledge and the example answers provided, the recommended dose and frequency of Methocarbamol (Robaxin) can be determined. Additionally, studies on other medications such as rofecoxib and acyclovir 5, 6 do not provide relevant information for determining the dosing of Robaxin.
