From the Research
Bovine colostrum supplementation has been shown to have potential health benefits, particularly in supporting immune function and reducing the risk of upper respiratory tract infections in athletes and individuals undergoing intense training, as evidenced by a 2012 study published in Medicine and sport science 1. The health benefits of bovine colostrum are thought to be attributed to its rich content of immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and growth factors, which support cellular growth and immune function. Some key benefits of bovine colostrum supplementation include:
- Maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and immune function in athletes and individuals undergoing intense training 1
- Reducing the risk of upper respiratory tract infections in athletes and individuals undergoing intense training 1
- Promoting gut health and potentially reducing symptoms of leaky gut syndrome
- Aiding in recovery after intense exercise
However, a more recent study published in 2020 in Nutrients found that bovine colostrum supplementation had no or a fairly low impact on improving immune function in athletes and physically active individuals 2. Despite this, the most recent and highest quality study, a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrients, suggests that bovine colostrum supplementation may still have some benefits, particularly in reducing the risk of upper respiratory tract infections, although more research is needed to fully understand its effects 2. It is essential to note that while bovine colostrum supplements are generally considered safe for most adults, individuals with dairy allergies should avoid them, and it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen. Some studies also suggest that bovine colostrum may have antibacterial effects and modulate immune response, which could be beneficial in preventing and treating various diseases, including gastrointestinal infections 3, 4, 5.
