Differential Diagnosis for Right Eye Pain and Blurred Vision

Single Most Likely Diagnosis

  • Dry Eye Syndrome: This condition is a common cause of eye pain and blurred vision, often due to inadequate tear production or poor tear quality. It's frequently seen in individuals who spend a lot of time on computers, wear contact lenses, or have certain autoimmune disorders.

Other Likely Diagnoses

  • Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, this is an inflammation or infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid. It can cause pain, redness, and blurred vision, and is highly contagious.
  • Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids, which can cause eye pain, redness, and blurred vision due to the irritation of the cornea.
  • Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which can cause pain, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision.
  • Glaucoma: A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to abnormally high pressure in the eye. It can cause eye pain, blurred vision, and loss of vision if not treated.

Do Not Miss Diagnoses

  • Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma: A medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. It causes severe eye pain, blurred vision, headache, nausea, and vomiting due to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure.
  • Endophthalmitis: A severe inflammation of the interior of the eye, usually caused by infection. It's a medical emergency that can lead to blindness if not promptly treated.
  • Retinal Detachment: A condition where the retina separates from the back of the eye, causing sudden blurred vision, floaters, and flashes of light. It requires urgent medical attention to prevent permanent vision loss.
  • Optic Neuritis: Inflammation of the optic nerve, which can cause pain with eye movement, blurred vision, and loss of color vision. It can be associated with multiple sclerosis and other conditions.

Rare Diagnoses

  • Scleritis: A severe inflammatory disease that affects the sclera (the white part of the eye), causing intense pain, redness, and blurred vision.
  • Orbital Cellulitis: An infection of the tissues surrounding the eye, which can cause pain, swelling, and blurred vision.
  • Ocular Migraine: A condition that can cause temporary blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and other visual disturbances, often accompanied by a headache.
  • Iritis: Inflammation of the iris, which can cause pain, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light, often associated with autoimmune disorders or infections.
