Use for the relief of pressure and bloating commonly referred to as gas The medication Simeticone (simethicone) is used for the relief of pressure and bloating commonly referred to as stomach gas 1.
From the Research
Simethicone is an effective over-the-counter medication for relieving gas-related stomach discomfort, and its use is supported by recent studies, such as the 2024 study published in the World journal of gastrointestinal pharmacology and therapeutics 2. The typical adult dose is 40-125 mg taken after meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily. For children, dosing varies by age: infants may take 20 mg up to four times daily, while older children can take 40 mg. Simethicone works by breaking up gas bubbles in the digestive tract, making them easier to eliminate through burping or passing gas. It doesn't prevent gas formation but helps relieve bloating, pressure, and discomfort once gas has formed. Some key points to consider when using simethicone include:
- It is generally considered safe with minimal side effects and can be used alongside most other medications.
- It's available in various forms including tablets, chewables, and liquid drops.
- For persistent gas problems, consider examining your diet for gas-producing foods like beans, carbonated beverages, and certain vegetables.
- If gas symptoms persist beyond two weeks or are accompanied by severe pain, weight loss, or changes in bowel habits, consult a healthcare provider as these could indicate a more serious condition. The 2024 study 2 demonstrated the efficacy and tolerability of a combination of chitin-glucan and simethicone in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with significant improvements in abdominal pain, bloating, and stool consistency. Other studies, such as the 2014 study published in the European review for medical and pharmacological sciences 3, have also shown the effectiveness of simethicone in reducing bloating and discomfort in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. However, the most recent and highest quality study, the 2024 study 2, provides the strongest evidence for the use of simethicone in relieving gas-related stomach discomfort.
