Thyroid Ultrasound Order
I'm ordering a thyroid ultrasound for you today to help us evaluate your thyroid health and identify any potential nodules or abnormalities that may require further attention. This non-invasive imaging test will provide valuable information about your thyroid gland structure and help guide our next steps in your care.
Why a Thyroid Ultrasound is Beneficial
Thyroid ultrasound is considered the most complete and cost-effective imaging method for evaluating the thyroid gland 1. This radiation-free procedure offers several important benefits:
- Detects thyroid nodules (even those too small to feel during examination)
- Evaluates nodule characteristics (size, composition, borders)
- Identifies suspicious features that may indicate potential malignancy
- Guides needle placement if a biopsy becomes necessary
- Assesses overall thyroid size and structure
What to Expect During the Procedure
- The ultrasound is quick, painless, and doesn't require any special preparation
- You'll lie comfortably on an exam table with your neck slightly extended
- A small amount of gel will be applied to your neck
- The technologist will gently move a small probe (transducer) over your neck
- The entire procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes
After Your Ultrasound
Once your ultrasound is complete, we'll review the results together to determine if any follow-up is needed. The ultrasound will help us identify:
- Whether nodules are present
- If nodules have suspicious characteristics requiring biopsy
- Any other structural abnormalities
According to national guidelines, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is recommended for nodules ≥1 cm or for smaller nodules with suspicious ultrasound features 2, 3. If your ultrasound reveals nodules requiring further evaluation, we'll discuss the next appropriate steps.
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about this procedure. I'm here to ensure you receive the best possible care for your thyroid health.
