Differential Diagnosis for Yellow Vaginal Discharge with No Odor
Single Most Likely Diagnosis
- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Although BV typically presents with a malodorous discharge, some cases may have minimal or no odor, especially in the early stages. The yellow color of the discharge could be due to the presence of bacteria.
Other Likely Diagnoses
- Yeast Infection (Candidiasis): A yeast infection can cause a yellow, thick, and cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge. The absence of odor does not rule out this diagnosis.
- Trichomoniasis: This sexually transmitted infection can cause a yellow-green or frothy vaginal discharge, which may not always have a strong odor.
- Cervicitis: Inflammation of the cervix can lead to an abnormal vaginal discharge, which may appear yellow and have little to no odor.
Do Not Miss Diagnoses
- Gonorrhea: A sexually transmitted infection that can cause a yellow or greenish vaginal discharge without a strong odor. Missing this diagnosis can lead to serious complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

- Foreign Body: A foreign object in the vagina, such as a retained tampon, can cause a yellow discharge without a strong odor.
- Vaginal Fistula: An abnormal connection between the vagina and another organ, such as the intestine or bladder, can cause a yellow discharge without a strong odor.
- Granuloma Inguinale: A rare sexually transmitted infection that can cause a yellow or beefy-red vaginal discharge without a strong odor.
