How to Use the Wixela (Fluticasone/Salmeterol) Inhaler

To use the Wixela Inhub inhaler correctly, follow these 5 steps: open the device, push down the lever, inhale the medicine deeply, close the device, and rinse your mouth with water afterward. 1

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open your Wixela Inhub

  • Hold the Inhub in one hand and with your other hand on the grip, lower the mouthpiece cover from top to bottom 1
  • When using for the first time, remove from foil pouch and write the opening date and "use by" date (1 month later) on the label 1

Step 2: Push down the lever

  • Hold the inhaler in the vertical position
  • Push the yellow lever down to the end of the purple arrows (you may hear a click) 1
  • Important: Do not close the inhaler or move the lever once pushed down to avoid wasting a dose 1

Step 3: Inhale your medicine

  • Before inhaling, breathe out (exhale) completely while holding the inhaler away from your mouth 1
  • Put the mouthpiece to your lips and breathe in quickly and deeply through the inhaler (not through your nose) 1
  • Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as comfortable 1
  • Breathe out slowly 1

Step 4: Close the inhaler

  • Push the mouthpiece cover up to the closed position (this will automatically return the yellow lever to the start position) 1
  • Make sure the inhaler is shut and you cannot see the mouthpiece 1
  • The dose counter will count down 1 dose as you close the mouthpiece cover 1

Step 5: Rinse your mouth

  • Rinse your mouth with water after inhaling the medicine 1
  • Spit out the water - do not swallow it (this helps prevent thrush) 1

Important Reminders

Dosage

  • The recommended dosage is 1 inhalation twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart 2
  • Take your medication at the same time each day for optimal therapeutic effect 2

Storage and Maintenance

  • Store at room temperature between 68° to 77°F (20° to 25°C) 1
  • Keep in a dry place away from direct heat and sunlight 1
  • Discard the inhaler 1 month after opening the foil pouch or when the counter reads 0, whichever comes first 1
  • Do not wash the inhaler or take it apart 1

When to Get a Refill

  • After taking 51 doses, a red indicator will appear on the counter 1
  • This warns you that 9 or fewer doses remain and serves as a reminder to get a refill 1

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not breathe into the mouthpiece 1
  • Do not take an extra dose, even if you did not taste or feel the powder 1
  • Never use Wixela for acute symptom relief (it is not a rescue inhaler) 2
  • Do not use with a spacer device 1

Special Considerations

  • If you have difficulty generating sufficient inspiratory flow, be aware that Wixela Inhub has demonstrated consistent dose delivery even at lower flow rates, which is important for patients with severe respiratory conditions 3
  • Studies have shown that the Wixela Inhub provides bioequivalent therapeutic effects to Advair Diskus, making it a reliable generic alternative 4

Following these instructions carefully will help ensure you receive the full benefit of your medication while minimizing potential side effects.
