From the Guidelines
The recommended dose of Cefuroxime axetil for adults is 500 mg twice per day, while for children it is 30 mg/kg per day in 2 divided doses, with a maximum of 500 mg per dose. This dosage is based on the guidelines for the treatment of Lyme disease, as outlined in the study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases in 2006 1. The study provides a table of recommended antimicrobial regimens for the treatment of patients with Lyme disease, which includes Cefuroxime axetil as a preferred oral regimen. Some key points to consider when prescribing Cefuroxime axetil include:
- The dosage should be adjusted for patients with impaired renal function
- The oral formulation should be taken with food to enhance absorption
- Treatment duration typically ranges from 5-10 days depending on the infection type and severity
- Cefuroxime axetil is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, and some Enterobacteriaceae. It's worth noting that the study also recommends reducing the dosage for patients with impaired renal function, and that Cefuroxime axetil is not recommended for patients who are unable to take or are intolerant of tetracyclines, penicillins, and cephalosporins 1. In terms of potential side effects and interactions, Cefuroxime axetil is generally well-tolerated, but may cause gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, or allergic reactions in some patients. Overall, Cefuroxime axetil at a dose of 500 mg twice per day for adults and 30 mg/kg per day in 2 divided doses for children is a effective and recommended treatment option for Lyme disease, as supported by the guidelines outlined in the study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases in 2006 1.
From the FDA Drug Label
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Dosage: Adults: The usual adult dosage range for Cefuroxime for Injection is 750 mg to 1.5 grams every 8 hours, usually for 5 to 10 days. In uncomplicated urinary tract infections, skin and skin-structure infections, disseminated gonococcal infections, and uncomplicated pneumonia, a 750 mg dose every 8 hours is recommended. In severe or complicated infections, a 1. 5 gram dose every 8 hours is recommended.
The recommended dose of Cefuroxime (Cefuroxime axetil) is:
- 750 mg to 1.5 grams every 8 hours for adults, depending on the type and severity of the infection.
- 750 mg every 8 hours for uncomplicated infections such as urinary tract infections, skin and skin-structure infections, disseminated gonococcal infections, and uncomplicated pneumonia.
- 1.5 grams every 8 hours for severe or complicated infections. 2
From the Research
Recommended Dose of Cefuroxime
The recommended dose of Cefuroxime (Cefuroxime axetil) varies depending on the condition being treated.
- For pneumonia in infants and children, a dose of 75 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours iv or im was used in a study 3.
- For urinary tract infections in children, a dose of 125 mg twice a day for 2 days was found to be effective 4.
- The study on cephalosporins in urinary tract infection mentions that early clinical trials with cefuroxime axetil appear promising for short-term and single-dose therapy, but does not specify a dose 5.
Dosage Regimens
- A study on cefixime, a different cephalosporin, mentions that cefixime 200 to 400mg daily administered as a single dose or in 2 divided doses is comparable to multiple daily doses of co-trimoxazole or amoxycillin in acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection 6.
- However, it is essential to note that the dosage regimens for cefuroxime may differ from those of other cephalosporins, such as cefixime.
Limitations
- The available studies do not provide a comprehensive overview of the recommended dose of Cefuroxime for all conditions.
- More research is needed to determine the optimal dosage regimens for Cefuroxime in various clinical settings.
