Post-Procedure Care Instructions After Moderate Conscious Sedation and Radiofrequency Ablation
After moderate conscious sedation or radiofrequency ablation, patients must be monitored until they return to baseline consciousness and should not drive, operate machinery, make important decisions, or drink alcohol for 24 hours after the procedure. 1
Recovery Period Monitoring
- Patients should be observed and monitored in an appropriately staffed and equipped area until they are near their baseline level of consciousness and no longer at increased risk for cardiorespiratory depression 1
- Oxygenation should be monitored continuously until patients are no longer at risk for hypoxemia 1
- Vital signs and circulation should be monitored at regular intervals (every 5-15 minutes) until patients are suitable for discharge 1
- Patients may initially experience sleepiness, impaired judgment, and trouble with balance for several hours after sedation 1
Discharge Requirements
- Patients must be alert and oriented, returning to their baseline mental status 1
- Cardiovascular function, airway patency, and protective airway reflexes must be satisfactory 1
- Vital signs should be stable and within acceptable limits 1
- Outpatients must be discharged in the presence of a responsible adult who will accompany them home and be able to report any complications 1
- If reversal agents (naloxone, flumazenil) were administered, sufficient time (up to 2 hours) should elapse before discharge to ensure patients don't become resedated 1
Post-Procedure Restrictions (24 hours)
- Do not drive or operate machinery 1
- Do not drink alcohol 1
- Do not take sleeping pills or medicines that cause drowsiness 1
- Do not make important decisions or sign legal documents 1
- Do not care for children alone 1
- Do not participate in activities where you could fall or become injured 1
- Have a responsible adult stay with you as directed by your healthcare provider 1
Eating and Drinking
- Follow specific instructions from your healthcare provider about what you may eat and drink 1
- Drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale yellow 1
- If vomiting occurs:
Radiofrequency Ablation-Specific Care
- Slight pain and temporary numbness in the procedure area are common after radiofrequency ablation 2
- Remove the bandage (dressing) after 24 hours or as directed by your healthcare provider 2
- Check the insertion site daily for signs of infection (redness, swelling, fluid, or blood) 2

Important Considerations for Providers
- Discharge criteria should be designed to minimize the risk of central nervous system or cardiorespiratory depression after discharge 1
- Written instructions regarding post-procedure diet, medications, activities, and emergency contact information should be provided to patients and their escorts 1
- Each facility should develop recovery and discharge criteria suitable for their specific patients and procedures 1
Remember that patients may experience varying degrees of sedative effects depending on the medications used, and monitoring should be tailored accordingly to ensure patient safety during the recovery period 1.
