The treatment for Tinea (ringworm) versicolor is Ketoconazole Cream 2% applied once daily for two weeks 1.

  • Key points:
    • Apply once daily
    • Cover affected and surrounding area
    • Treatment duration: two weeks
  • Indication: Tinea (pityriasis) versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum orbiculare) 1

From the Research

For tinea versicolor treatment, I recommend using topical ketoconazole 2% shampoo, as it has been shown to be safe and highly effective in treating the condition, with a clinical response rate of 73% at day 31, as demonstrated in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 2.

Treatment Options

The following treatment options are available for tinea versicolor:

  • Topical ketoconazole 2% shampoo: apply to affected areas, leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse off, use daily for 1-2 weeks
  • Topical selenium sulfide 2.5% shampoo: apply to affected areas, leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse off, use daily for 1-2 weeks
  • Topical clotrimazole 1% cream: apply twice daily for 2-4 weeks

Oral Therapy

For widespread or stubborn cases, oral fluconazole 400mg as a single dose or 300mg weekly for 2-4 weeks may be necessary, as it has been shown to be effective in treating tinea versicolor, with a maximal cure rate achieved at 8 weeks from the start of treatment 3.

Prevention of Recurrence

To prevent recurrence, maintenance therapy with monthly use of antifungal shampoo may be necessary, especially in warm, humid weather, as tinea versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which is normally present on skin 4.

Additional Measures

During treatment, it is recommended to avoid excessive sweating, wear loose cotton clothing, and shower promptly after exercise, as these measures can help prevent the spread of the infection and promote healing.

Note

Skin discoloration may persist for weeks or months after successful treatment as the skin tone gradually normalizes, so patience and continued treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal results 5.
