From the Guidelines
After hemorrhoid treatment, I strongly recommend a regimen that includes increased fiber and water intake, as well as the administration of flavonoids to relieve symptoms, as these measures have been shown to reduce morbidity and improve quality of life 1. To manage discomfort and promote healing after hemorrhoid treatment, consider the following measures:
- Increase fiber intake through foods or supplements, such as psyllium, to reduce hemorrhoidal bleeding and painful defecation 1
- Drink plenty of water (8-10 glasses daily) to prevent constipation and promote healing
- Apply topical treatments, such as witch hazel pads or medicated wipes, after bowel movements for cleaning and soothing
- Consider the use of flavonoids, which have been shown to increase venous tone, lymphatic drainage, and capillary resistance, and normalize capillary permeability 1
- Sitz baths (warm water soaks) for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times daily, can help relieve discomfort and keep the area clean
- Avoid straining during bowel movements and maintain adequate bathroom habits to prevent further irritation to the hemorrhoidal tissue It is essential to note that while topical analgesics and corticosteroid creams may provide symptomatic relief, their long-term use can be deleterious, and their effectiveness in reducing hemorrhoidal swelling, bleeding, or protrusion is not well supported by evidence 1. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other topical agents is not recommended due to the lack of evidence supporting their effectiveness in managing complicated hemorrhoids 1.
From the Research
Home Medications After Hemorrhoid Treatment
- Stool softeners are recommended to manage hemorrhoids conservatively 2, 3
- Topical over-the-counter preparations, such as hydrocortisone creams, can be used to relieve symptoms 2, 3
- Topical nitroglycerine can be used as part of medical management 3
- Metronidazole has been shown to be effective in pain management after hemorrhoidectomy 4
- Oral phlebotonic drugs can help control symptoms 5
- Topical medications, such as ointments or suppositories, can be beneficial during the acute phase or in the post-operative period 5
- Flavonoids can be used as a treatment option 6
