Differential Diagnosis
- Single most likely diagnosis
- Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI): This condition is likely due to the recent increase in activity and potentially poor ergonomics while studying or using computers at university. The symptoms of stiffness, pain, and tendon shifting are consistent with RSI, particularly in the wrists, which are commonly affected.
- Other Likely diagnoses
- Overuse Injury: Similar to RSI, overuse injuries can occur from repetitive activities, such as typing, writing, or other actions that involve the wrists, ankles, knees, back, neck, and shoulders.
- Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons can cause pain, stiffness, and cracking sensations, which are consistent with the symptoms described.
- Fibromyalgia: Although less likely, fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain and stiffness, particularly in the neck, shoulders, back, and wrists.
- Do Not Miss
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Although less likely, RA is a serious condition that can cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent joint damage.
- Osteoarthritis: While less common in young adults, osteoarthritis can cause joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the wrists, knees, and spine.
- Infectious Arthritis: Bacterial or viral infections can cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, which can be severe and require prompt medical attention.
- Rare diagnoses
- Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A genetic disorder that affects connective tissue, which can cause joint hypermobility, pain, and instability.
- Marfan Syndrome: A genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissue, which can cause joint pain, stiffness, and other systemic symptoms.
- Sjögren's Syndrome: An autoimmune disorder that can cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, as well as other systemic symptoms.
