Recommended Dosage of Moxclav 625 for Adults
For most adult bacterial infections, Moxclav 625 mg (amoxicillin 500 mg/clavulanate 125 mg) should be administered three times daily (every 8 hours) orally. 1, 2
Standard Dosing Regimen
The 625 mg formulation (500/125 mg) three times daily provides adequate coverage for mild-to-moderate infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections. 2
This dosing schedule has been validated across multiple clinical scenarios including:
Treatment Duration
- For uncomplicated acute bacterial rhinosinusitis: 5-7 days 4
- For respiratory tract infections: typically 14 days 1
- For acute tracheobronchitis: 5-10 days 3
When to Consider Alternative Dosing
You should NOT use the 625 mg three times daily regimen if the patient has risk factors for resistant organisms. 4 In these cases, escalate to higher-dose formulations (875/125 mg twice daily or 2000/125 mg twice daily). 4, 2
Risk factors requiring dose escalation include: 4
- Antibiotic use within past 4-6 weeks
- Age >65 years
- Recent hospitalization
- Immunocompromised status
- Geographic regions with high penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Smoking or household smoker
Important Clinical Caveats
Do NOT substitute two 250 mg tablets for one 500 mg tablet, as this results in excessive clavulanate dosing and increased gastrointestinal side effects. 2
Completing the full prescribed course is crucial to prevent treatment failure and resistance development. 2
Gastrointestinal disturbances (particularly diarrhea) are the most common adverse effects, occurring in approximately 10% of patients on the three-times-daily regimen. 1, 5
For penicillin-allergic patients, alternative antibiotics (doxycycline, respiratory fluoroquinolones like levofloxacin or moxifloxacin) should be used instead. 1, 4
