From the Research
Diagnosis of Torus Palatinus
- Torus palatinus (TP) is a benign, bony outgrowth located on the hard palate 1
- It can be diagnosed through intra-oral exam and computed tomography scan (axial, coronal and sagittal view) 2
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also be used to diagnose TP, although it is not commonly used in dentistry 3
- The diagnosis of TP is important to rule out other possible conditions, such as osteoma, pyogenic granuloma, or soft-tissue neoplasia 4
Treatment of Torus Palatinus
- Surgical removal of TP is indicated in certain circumstances, such as:
- Conservative surgical removal is considered the first choice treatment when TP must be removed 5
- Pre-planning the surgery using 3D-scan-printing can be helpful in achieving a successful outcome 5
- Histopathological examination can confirm the diagnosis of TP and rule out other conditions 4
