How to Apply Mupirocycin 2% Ointment

Apply a small amount of mupirocin 2% ointment to the affected area using a cotton swab or gauze pad three times daily for 5-10 days, and optionally cover with a gauze dressing. 1

Application Technique

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment 1
  • Use a cotton swab or gauze pad to apply a small amount of mupirocin ointment directly to the affected area 1
  • Apply three times daily for optimal efficacy 1, 2
  • Optionally cover the treated area with a gauze dressing if desired 1

Duration of Treatment

  • For skin infections and wounds: Apply for 5-10 days 3
  • For impetigo: Maximum duration is up to 10 days 1
  • Re-evaluate within 3-5 days if no clinical response is observed 1

Critical Safety Precautions

  • For external use only - do not use in the nose, eyes, or other mucous membranes 1
  • If accidental eye contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water 1
  • Do not apply concurrently with any other lotions, creams, or ointments on the same area 1
  • Stop use immediately if severe itching, rash, or irritation develops and contact your healthcare provider 1
  • Seek emergency care if severe allergic reactions occur, such as swelling of lips, face, tongue, or wheezing 1

Special Considerations for Nasal Decolonization

When used specifically for nasal decolonization (different formulation and indication):

  • Apply twice daily to the inside of each nostril 3
  • Continue for 5-10 days as part of decolonization protocols 3
  • Combine with chlorhexidine body washing for enhanced effectiveness in preventing recurrent infections 3

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Do not use the topical ointment formulation intranasally - this is for skin application only; nasal decolonization requires a specific intranasal formulation 1
  • Do not continue beyond 10 days without medical re-evaluation to avoid resistance development 1
  • Do not apply to deep wounds or systemic infections - these require systemic antibiotics 4
