Care and Management of Head Staples

Staples are an effective and safe method for scalp wound closure, requiring minimal care focused on keeping the wound clean and dry, with removal typically at 7-14 days depending on wound healing. 1

Immediate Post-Procedure Care

Wound Protection

  • Keep the stapled area clean and dry for the first 24-48 hours 2
  • Cover with a clean, dry bandage if there is any drainage 2
  • After 48 hours, gentle washing with soap and water is acceptable 2
  • Avoid submerging the wound in water (no swimming or prolonged bathing) until staples are removed 2

Hand Hygiene

  • Wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand gel before and after touching the wound area 2
  • This prevents introduction of bacteria that could cause infection 2

Daily Wound Care

Cleaning Protocol

  • Gently clean around the staples daily with mild soap and water after the first 48 hours 2
  • Pat dry with a clean towel—do not rub the area 2
  • No need for antiseptic solutions unless specifically instructed by your provider 2

Monitoring for Infection

Watch for these warning signs and contact your provider immediately if any develop: 2

  • Increasing redness extending more than 5 cm (2 inches) from the wound edge 3
  • Purulent (pus-like) drainage from the wound 3
  • Increasing pain, swelling, or warmth around the staples 3
  • Fever over 38.5°C (101.3°F) 3
  • Red streaking from the wound 2
  • Foul odor from the wound 2

Activity Restrictions

Physical Activity

  • Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or activities that cause excessive sweating for the first few days 2
  • Avoid contact sports or activities where the head could be bumped until staples are removed 2
  • Normal daily activities are generally acceptable if they don't stress the wound 2

Hair Care

  • Do not apply hair products (gel, spray, dye) directly to the stapled area 2
  • Gentle hair washing is acceptable after 48 hours, but avoid scrubbing the stapled area 2
  • Pat the area dry rather than rubbing with a towel 2

Staple Removal

Timing

  • Staples are typically removed 7-14 days after placement, depending on wound healing 1
  • Scalp wounds generally heal well due to excellent blood supply and may be ready for removal at 7-10 days 1
  • Your provider will determine the exact timing based on wound assessment 1

Pain Management During Removal

  • Staple removal causes moderate pain in most patients 4
  • Topical lidocaine patches applied around (not directly on) the wound 45-60 minutes before removal significantly reduce pain 4
  • Over-the-counter pain medication (acetaminophen) can be taken 30-60 minutes before the appointment 2
  • The removal procedure itself is quick, typically taking only seconds 1

What to Expect

  • A healthcare provider will use a specialized staple remover tool 1
  • Each staple is removed individually by bending it in the middle and lifting it out 1
  • Some mild discomfort or pulling sensation is normal 4
  • Minor bleeding at staple sites may occur but should stop quickly with gentle pressure 2

When Antibiotics Are NOT Needed

Most scalp wounds closed with staples do NOT require antibiotics 3

  • The scalp has excellent blood supply and natural resistance to infection 1
  • Prophylactic antibiotics are not indicated for clean scalp wounds 3

When Antibiotics ARE Needed

Antibiotics should be started if any of the following develop: 3

  • Signs of systemic infection: fever >38.5°C, heart rate >110 beats/minute 3
  • Extensive redness extending >5 cm from the wound 3
  • Purulent drainage from the wound 3
  • Signs of deeper infection or abscess formation 3
  • Patient is immunocompromised 3

Special Considerations

Advantages of Staples

  • Staples are faster to place and remove than sutures 1
  • Lower infection rates compared to sutures in scalp wounds 1, 5
  • No risk of needle-stick injury during placement 1
  • Excellent cosmetic outcomes for scalp wounds 1

Follow-Up

  • Return for staple removal as scheduled—do not leave staples in longer than recommended 1
  • Contact your provider before the scheduled removal if signs of infection develop 3
  • If wound edges separate before removal, contact your provider immediately 6
