Nasogastric Tube Size for Adult Feeding
For adult nasogastric tube feeding, use fine bore 5-8 French gauge tubes, as recommended by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. 1, 2
Recommended Tube Size
- Fine bore 5-8 French gauge NG tubes should be used for feeding applications in adults 1, 2
- Small diameter tubes (8 French) are specifically recommended for stroke patients to minimize the risk of internal pressure sores 1
- Large bore PVC tubes must be avoided for feeding purposes, as they irritate the nose and esophagus and significantly increase risks of gastric reflux and aspiration 1, 2
When to Use Larger Tubes
- Tubes with greater diameter should only be placed if gastric decompression or aspiration is necessary 1
- Large bore tubes are not appropriate for routine enteral feeding 1
Critical Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not use large bore PVC tubes for feeding - they cause mucosal irritation and increase aspiration risk 1, 2
- Ensure proper tube placement verification before initiating feeds via x-ray or aspiration of gastric content with pH measurement 1, 2
- If administering high fiber feeds or medications through the tube, a larger bore may be required, but this should be the exception rather than the rule 1
