From the Research

Interaction between Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin with Ofloxacin

  • There is evidence to suggest that the addition of ofloxacin to a standard triple-drug regimen containing amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and a proton pump inhibitor increases the Helicobacter pylori eradication rate 1.
  • A study found that a quadruple-drug regimen containing ofloxacin, clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and omeprazole was more effective than the standard triple-therapy regimen minus ofloxacin in eradicating H. pylori infection 1.
  • However, there is no direct evidence on the pharmacokinetic interaction between amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and ofloxacin.
  • Studies have investigated the pharmacokinetic interactions between amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and other drugs, such as anaprazole 2 and YH4808 3, but not ofloxacin.
  • Another study found that clarithromycin inhibits the metabolism of omeprazole, which may contribute to the high eradication rates achieved by triple therapy with omeprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin 4.
  • Levofloxacin-based therapies have been suggested as an alternative to quadruple therapy, and a study found that a seven-day triple therapy with esomeprazole, levofloxacin, and either amoxicillin or clarithromycin was very effective and safe for H. pylori eradication 5.
