From the Guidelines
I strongly advise against the use of CBNTHC gummies due to their potential to cause significant side effects and long-term negative consequences, particularly in relation to liver enzyme elevation, drug-induced liver injury, and psychiatric risks. The use of cannabis and cannabinoids, including CBNTHC gummies, has been associated with a range of adverse effects, including liver enzyme elevation and drug-induced liver injury, with a pooled proportion of elevated liver enzymes of 0.07 (95% CI, 0.05 to 0.12) and a pooled proportion of those with drug-induced liver injury of 0.03 (95% CI, 0.10 to 0.06) 1. Additionally, long-term use of cannabis and cannabinoids may lead to psychiatric risks, including an increased risk of developing depressive disorders and exacerbating psychiatric disorders in vulnerable individuals, with 10% of adults with chronic cannabis use developing cannabis use disorders 1.
Some of the potential side effects of CBNTHC gummies include:
- GI: Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, characterized by cyclical emetic episodes, mimicking cyclic vomiting syndrome, and relieved by hot showers 1
- Cardiovascular: Arrhythmias and orthostatic hypotension, although there is no evidence that cumulative lifetime use is associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease or associated mortality 1
- Respiratory: Conflicting data exist regarding cannabis use and respiratory disease, often confounded by concomitant nicotine use 1
- Psychiatric: Long-term psychiatric risks, including an increased risk of developing depressive disorders and exacerbating psychiatric disorders in vulnerable individuals 1
- Driving Safety: Cannabis users are at higher risk of motor vehicle accidents, with a meta-analysis of nine epidemiologic studies finding that cannabis use by drivers was associated with a significantly increased risk of crash involvement 1
The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of THC and CBD, including their bioavailability, vary according to formulation and route of administration, with oral THC onset occurring in 30 minutes to 2 hours and lasting 5-8 hours 1. Administration with a high-fat meal significantly increases oral cannabinoid absorption and may exacerbate side effects. Dosing should start at the lowest possible dose and be increased gingerly with sufficient time between doses to gauge effects. It is essential to exercise caution when using CBNTHC gummies, particularly in adults with cancer, due to the potential for drug-drug interactions mediated through altered drug metabolism pharmacokinetics.
From the Research
Side Effects of CBNTHC Gummies
- The current evidence on the side effects of CBNTHC Gummies is limited, and most studies focus on the effects of CBD and THC separately 2, 3, 4, 5.
- A study on the effectiveness of a cannabinoids supplement, which included 3 mg Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, 6 mg cannabinol, 10 mg cannabidiol, found that it was well-tolerated in adults with subthreshold insomnia symptoms, with no adverse events reported 4.
- Another study found that CBD was well-tolerated in all but 3 patients, with anxiety scores decreasing within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remaining decreased during the study duration 3.
- A retrospective cohort study found that increased THC:CBD ratio was associated with a greater response for neuropathic pain, insomnia, and depressive symptoms, but not for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related flashbacks or anorexia 5.
Long-term Negative Effects
- There is limited evidence on the long-term negative effects of CBNTHC Gummies, and more research is needed to fully understand their potential risks and benefits 2, 3, 4, 5.
- A study found that CBD may have potential therapeutic effects for specific psychopathological conditions, such as substance use disorders, chronic psychosis, and anxiety, but further large-scale RCTs are required to better evaluate its efficacy and exclude any possible abuse liability 2.
- Another study suggested that controlled clinical studies are needed to examine the longer-term effects of CBD and THC supplements in a variety of populations and environments 3, 4.
Other Considerations
- It's worth noting that the evidence on CBNTHC Gummies is not directly related to physical activity, and a study on the health benefits of physical activity found that marked health benefits are observed with relatively minor volumes of physical activity, but this is not relevant to the topic of CBNTHC Gummies 6.
