From the Research
Administration Interval for BOTOX in Migraine Treatment
- The recommended administration interval for BOTOX (Botulinum Toxin) in the treatment of migraine headaches is every 12 weeks, as repeated injections every 12 weeks showed a significant reduction in migraine disability [ 1 ].
- A study comparing the efficacy of different doses of BOTOX found that injections every 3 months were effective in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks [ 2 ].
- Another study found that onabotulinumtoxinA injection remains a treatment option of reasonable cost-effectiveness in carefully selected patients, with cessation of treatment recommended in patients who do not respond to 2-3 injection cycles [ 3 ].
- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled exploratory study found that multiple treatments of botulinum toxin type A at 90-day intervals were safe and well tolerated over an active treatment period lasting 9 months [ 4 ].
Key Findings
- Repeated injections of BOTOX every 12 weeks can reduce migraine disability by 61.1% and 65.72% after the first and second injections, respectively [ 1 ].
- The dose of 195 U of BOTOX can be recommended in preventive treatment of chronic migraine as more effective [ 2 ].
- OnabotulinumtoxinA injection is limited to chronic migraine patients who fail at least 2-3 preventive medications, due to either lack of efficacy or intolerability [ 3 ].
- Multiple treatments with BOTOX were shown to be safe and well tolerated over an active treatment period lasting 9 months [ 4 ].
