Health Risks and Hazards of Mink Oil
Mink oil is safe for cosmetic use with minimal health risks, though formulators should be aware of potential pesticide contamination and penetration-enhancing properties. 1, 2
Toxicity Profile
• Acute toxicity is negligible - oral LD50 exceeds 64.0 cc/kg in rats, indicating very low acute toxicity 1
• Dermal irritation is minimal to absent - no erythema or edema observed after 24-hour application to intact or scarified rabbit skin 1
• Ocular exposure is non-irritating - testing in rabbits showed mink oil is not an ocular irritant 1
• Sensitization risk is low - a 50% dilution of mink oil cream did not sensitize guinea pigs in maximization testing 1
Skin Penetration Concerns
• Limited dermal absorption occurs - mink oil was detected on skin surface of all test subjects 1 hour after application, but penetrated into the stratum corneum in only 2 of 5 panelists 1
• Penetration enhancement is a concern - mink oil may enhance penetration of other chemicals applied concurrently, which formulators should consider when combining ingredients 1
Chemical Contamination Risks
• Pesticide residues require monitoring - while analyses demonstrate mink oil can be substantially free of pesticides, available data on absence of pesticide residues are limited 1
• PCB contamination limits established - total PCB/pesticide contamination should not exceed 40 ppm, with no more than 10 ppm for any specific residue 1
• Manufacturing reduces contaminants - high-temperature rendering (230-240°F) and saponification processes help reduce free fatty acids and impurities 1
Inhalation Considerations
• Aerosol exposure data lacking - no inhalation toxicity data are available for mink oil specifically 1
• Particle size provides protection - cosmetic aerosol and spray particle diameters are more than an order of magnitude larger than respirable particles, reducing inhalation risk 1
Clinical Use Safety
• Concentrations up to 2.8% are non-irritating - single occlusive patch testing found no irritation at concentrations up to 2.8% 1
• Exaggerated use may cause mild irritation - two exaggerated-use studies noted transient mild to no irritation 1
• Current cosmetic use is safe - mink oil is used in up to 3% concentration as a hair-conditioning agent, occlusive skin-conditioning agent, and surfactant 1, 2
Regulatory Status
• Safety reaffirmed in 2023 - the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety reviewed updated information and reaffirmed their 1998 conclusion that mink oil is safe as a cosmetic ingredient at current use practices and concentrations 2
• No UV protection - mink oil does not absorb significant UVA or UVB radiation 1
