Duration of Nexplanon Use
Nexplanon may remain in place for 3 years. 1
FDA-Approved Duration
- The etonogestrel implant (Nexplanon) is approved for 3 years of continuous use from the time of insertion 1
- This 3-year duration applies to all users regardless of age, including adolescents 1
Efficacy Throughout Duration
- The implant maintains its contraceptive effectiveness for the entire 3-year period with a failure rate of less than 1% 1, 2
- Both typical use and perfect use failure rates remain below 1% throughout the approved duration 1
Removal and Replacement Timing
- The implant must be removed at or before 3 years to maintain contraceptive protection 1
- If continued contraception with Nexplanon is desired, a new implant can be inserted immediately after removal of the old implant through the same incision 3
- Removal can be performed at any time during the menstrual cycle 3
Important Clinical Considerations
- The implant contains barium sulfate, making it radiographically visible to confirm placement and facilitate removal 3
- If a woman wishes to continue using this method beyond 3 years, she requires removal of the existing implant and insertion of a new one 3
- No gap in contraceptive coverage occurs if the new implant is inserted immediately at the time of removal 3
Common Pitfall to Avoid
- Do not leave the implant in place beyond 3 years, as efficacy data beyond this timeframe are not established and contraceptive protection cannot be guaranteed 1
