From the Research

Smecta (diosmectite) should be taken 1-3 times daily for adults, with a standard dose of one packet (3g) mixed in water, as it has been shown to be effective in reducing stool output and diarrhea duration in children with acute watery diarrhea, as demonstrated in a study published in 2009 1.

Dosage and Administration

  • For acute diarrhea, adults can take up to 3 packets per day for 3-7 days, then reduce to 1-2 packets daily until symptoms resolve.
  • Children usually receive lower doses based on age: 1-2 packets daily for children over 2 years, and 1 packet daily for children under 2 years.
  • Smecta works by forming a protective layer over the intestinal mucosa, absorbing toxins and pathogens, and helping restore normal bowel function.

Important Considerations

  • It should be taken between meals for maximum effectiveness, and at least 2 hours apart from other medications since it may reduce their absorption.
  • If diarrhea persists beyond 3-5 days or is accompanied by fever, blood in stool, or severe abdominal pain, medical attention should be sought.
  • Always maintain adequate hydration when experiencing diarrhea, even when taking Smecta.

Long-term Use

  • A study published in 2022 found that long-term diosmectite use does not alter the gut microbiota in adults with chronic diarrhea 2.

Additional Evidence

  • A meta-analysis published in 2015 found that diosmectite significantly decreased the duration of acute diarrhea and increased the cure rate in children with acute childhood diarrhea 3.
  • Another study published in 2015 discussed the efficacy and safety of diosmectite in acute childhood diarrhea, and found that it may be a useful additive in the treatment of acute childhood diarrhea 3.
