STRATTERA (ATOMOXETINE) PATIENT HANDOUT

What is Strattera?

Strattera is a non-stimulant medication used to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults by increasing noradrenaline and dopamine in specific brain areas that control attention and behavior. 1 Unlike stimulant medications, Strattera has no abuse potential and is not a controlled substance. 2

How to Take This Medication

Dosing Instructions

  • Available forms: Capsules (10,18,25,40,60,80, or 100 mg) and oral solution (4 mg/mL) 1
  • Dosing schedule: Can be taken once daily in the morning OR split into two equal doses (morning and late afternoon/early evening) 3
  • Maximum dose: 1.4 mg/kg/day or 100 mg/day, whichever is lower 1
  • Dose increases: Your doctor will gradually increase the dose based on your child's weight and response 1

Important Medication Interactions

  • Tell your doctor if taking antidepressants (especially paroxetine, fluoxetine, or quinidine), as these can significantly increase Strattera levels in the blood 1
  • Some people (about 7% of the population) metabolize Strattera more slowly, which may lead to higher blood levels and more side effects 1

What to Expect

When Will It Work?

  • Strattera may take several weeks to show full benefit, unlike stimulant medications that work immediately 2
  • Continue taking as prescribed even if you don't see immediate results 4

Common Side Effects (Occur in More Than 5% of Patients)

The most common side effects include: 3

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Decreased appetite and weight loss
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue and drowsiness
  • Headache

Most side effects are mild to moderate and often improve after the first few weeks of treatment. 3

Critical Safety Warnings

Monitor for Suicidal Thoughts (BLACK BOX WARNING)

Children and adolescents taking Strattera must be closely monitored for suicidal thoughts, especially during the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed. 1 Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Talk about suicide or dying
  • New or worsening depression
  • Unusual behavior changes
  • Increased agitation or irritability

Cardiovascular Monitoring Required

  • Before starting: Tell your doctor about any personal or family history of heart problems, sudden death, fainting, or irregular heartbeat 5
  • During treatment: Your doctor will monitor heart rate and blood pressure regularly, as 5-10% of patients experience significant increases (≥20 beats per minute or ≥15-20 mmHg) 3
  • Most cardiovascular changes are mild and not clinically significant in the majority of patients 6

Liver Function Warning

  • Rare but serious: Strattera can cause severe liver injury in extremely rare cases 6
  • Stop medication and call your doctor immediately if you develop: yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, upper right abdominal pain, or unexplained flu-like symptoms 1

Other Important Warnings

  • Psychiatric symptoms: May cause or worsen symptoms of psychosis, mania, or aggression, particularly in patients with bipolar disorder 1
  • Priapism: Rare cases of prolonged, painful erections have been reported; seek immediate medical attention if this occurs 1
  • Urinary problems: May cause difficulty urinating or urinary retention 1

Growth and Development

What to Expect with Long-Term Use

  • Initial period (first 9-18 months): Children may experience slower weight gain and height growth than expected 3
  • Long-term (2-3 years): Growth typically returns to normal expected patterns 3
  • Your doctor will monitor your child's height and weight regularly throughout treatment 3

When to Contact Your Doctor Immediately

Call your doctor or seek emergency care if you experience:

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
  • Chest pain, rapid heartbeat, or fainting
  • Signs of liver problems (yellowing skin/eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain)
  • Prolonged painful erection
  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, difficulty breathing, swelling)
  • New or worsening aggressive behavior or hostility 1

Tips for Success

Maximizing Effectiveness

  • Take consistently: Missing doses reduces effectiveness 4
  • Don't stop suddenly: Discuss with your doctor before discontinuing, though withdrawal symptoms are uncommon 7
  • Be patient: Full benefits may take 4-12 weeks to develop 4
  • Attend follow-up appointments: Regular monitoring ensures safety and optimal dosing 5

Managing Side Effects

  • Nausea: Take with food if stomach upset occurs 3
  • Decreased appetite: Offer nutritious, calorie-dense foods when appetite is present 3
  • Drowsiness: Taking the full dose at bedtime may help if daytime sleepiness is problematic 3

Special Populations

Who May Particularly Benefit from Strattera

  • Patients at risk for substance abuse (non-controlled substance) 2
  • Those with co-existing anxiety or tic disorders 2
  • Patients who prefer to avoid stimulant medications 2
  • Those who need consistent symptom control throughout the day and evening 7
