Conditions and Plasma Exchange
The following conditions are indications for plasma exchange:
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane (anti-GBM) disease
- Pauci-Immune Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA)-Associated Vasculitis
- Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) 1 Some studies suggest that plasma exchange may be beneficial in the treatment of Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP) in adults 2, 3.
Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP) and Plasma Exchange
- HSP is an IgA-mediated systemic small-vessel vasculitis with a predilection for the skin, gastrointestinal tract, joints, and kidneys 4.
- The role of corticosteroids in the treatment of HSP is still controversial, but they may be used as a symptom reliever 5.
- Plasma exchange has been shown to be beneficial in some cases of HSP, particularly in adults with severe disease 2, 3.
Indications for Plasma Exchange
Based on the available evidence, the condition that is not consistently indicated for plasma exchange is:
