From the Guidelines
Trichinella is characterized by having Eosinophilia, as it is a significant increase in eosinophil count, often accompanied by symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and muscle pain [ 1 ].
Key Features of Trichinella
- Not a Protozoan: Trichinella is a parasitic nematode, not a protozoan [ 1 ].
- Eosinophilia: A prominent feature of trichinosis, which is the disease caused by Trichinella [ 1 ].
- Clinical Presentation: Includes symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, followed by severe myalgia, muscle weakness, and consequent respiratory failure [ 1 ].
- Investigations: Serology or muscle biopsy, with an elevated blood creatinine kinase level and eosinophil count >3 x 10^9/L [ 1 ].
- Treatment: Albendazole 400 mg od for 3 days (mild disease) or longer for severe disease [ 1 ].
