From the Research
For trichotillomania, the recommended dose of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is typically 1,200 mg to 2,400 mg per day, divided into two daily doses, as supported by the most recent and highest quality study 1. Most treatment protocols start with 1,200 mg daily (600 mg twice daily) for the first week, then increase to 2,400 mg daily (1,200 mg twice daily) if needed and tolerated. This supplement should be taken consistently for at least 8-12 weeks to evaluate its effectiveness, as improvements may take time to become noticeable. NAC works by regulating glutamate, a neurotransmitter involved in compulsive behaviors, and by providing antioxidant effects that may help normalize brain chemistry related to impulse control, as shown in studies 2, 3, 4, 5. Some key points to consider when using NAC for trichotillomania include:
- Starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing as needed and tolerated
- Taking the supplement consistently for at least 8-12 weeks to evaluate its effectiveness
- Monitoring for potential side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, or a rotten egg smell
- Consulting with a healthcare provider before starting NAC, especially for those taking other medications, as NAC may interact with certain drugs including some antibiotics and medications for heart conditions. It's also important to note that NAC has been shown to be well-tolerated and effective in reducing symptoms of trichotillomania in several studies, including a case report of a 17-year-old male who improved dramatically after 6 months of treatment with NAC 1.
