From the Guidelines

Adult Dosage of Tylenol (Acetaminophen)

The recommended adult dosage of Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is 325-1000mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 4000mg in 24 hours 1.

  • The FDA recommends limiting daily acetaminophen intake to a maximum of 4g to reduce the risk of severe liver injury from acetaminophen overdosing 1.
  • However, due to concerns of hepatic toxicity, it is suggested that providers consider limiting chronic administration of acetaminophen to 3g or less per day 1.
  • It is essential to adhere to these guidelines to minimize the risk of liver damage and other adverse effects, especially when using combination opioid-acetaminophen products or in patients with liver disease 1.
  • A daily dose of 2-3g of acetaminophen is generally recommended, as patients with liver cirrhosis are at risk of metabolic disorder and prolonged half-life of acetaminophen 1.
