From the Research
Micro-needling on the face is not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks and lack of definitive safety studies. The most recent and highest quality study on the safety profile of microneedling, published in 2021 1, highlights that while microneedling is generally safe, it can cause transient procedural events, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, and other adverse effects. However, this study does not specifically address the safety of microneedling during pregnancy. Another study from 2022 2 emphasizes the importance of knowing the efficacy and safety profile of topical products during pregnancy, but does not provide conclusive evidence on the safety of microneedling.
Given the potential risks and uncertainties, it is best to postpone microneedling until after delivery and breastfeeding are complete. Some key concerns include:
- Increased infection risk due to micro-injuries created during the procedure
- Unpredictable results due to skin sensitivity and hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Potential risks associated with topical products used in conjunction with microneedling, such as numbing creams, vitamin C serums, or hyaluronic acid, which have not been thoroughly studied for safety during pregnancy
If concerned about skin issues during pregnancy, safer alternatives include:
- Gentle cleansing
- Pregnancy-safe moisturizers
- Consulting with a dermatologist who specializes in treating pregnant patients for specific recommendations tailored to individual skin concerns. A study from 2022 3 suggests that microneedling with irradiated amniotic collagen matrix can be effective for facial rejuvenation, but this study does not address the safety of microneedling during pregnancy. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize caution and avoid elective cosmetic procedures during pregnancy.
