Symbicort Dosing
Symbicort is an inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting beta-agonist combination medication (budesonide/formoterol) used for asthma and COPD—it is NOT a probiotic supplement. The question appears to contain a fundamental misunderstanding about what Symbicort is.
Standard Dosing Regimen
For Adults and Adolescents ≥12 Years with Asthma
Administer 2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening, approximately 12 hours apart) 1.
Starting dose options:
- Symbicort 80/4.5 mcg: 2 inhalations twice daily
- Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg: 2 inhalations twice daily (for more severe disease)
Maximum dose: Symbicort 160/4.5, two inhalations twice daily 1
Dose escalation: If inadequate response after 1-2 weeks on the 80/4.5 strength, switch to 160/4.5 strength 1
For Children 6 to <12 Years with Asthma
The only approved dose is Symbicort 80/4.5: 2 inhalations twice daily 1.
The higher strength (160/4.5) is not indicated for children under 12 years of age.
For Adults with COPD
Symbicort 160/4.5: 2 inhalations twice daily 1.
This is the only strength approved for COPD treatment. The 80/4.5 strength is not indicated for COPD.
Critical Administration Details
- Priming: Before first use, release 2 test sprays into the air after shaking well for 5 seconds before each spray 1
- Re-priming: If unused for >7 days or dropped, prime again with 2 test sprays 1
- Mouth rinsing: Rinse mouth with water without swallowing after each use 1
- Do not exceed prescribed dose: More frequent administration or higher number of inhalations increases risk of adverse effects from formoterol 1
Important Limitations
Symbicort is NOT indicated for relief of acute bronchospasm—patients need a separate short-acting beta-agonist rescue inhaler 1. Patients should not use additional long-acting beta-agonists while on Symbicort 1.
If the question truly intended to ask about probiotic dosing, there is no standardized "Symbiocort" probiotic product in the medical literature. Probiotic dosing varies widely by strain, formulation, and indication, typically ranging from 10^9 to 10^11 CFU daily for adults, with pediatric doses adjusted by age and weight 2, 3, 4.
