Ozempic Ordering Format
Ozempic (semaglutide) is ordered and dispensed exclusively as pre-filled pens, not in milliliters or vials 1.
Available Formulations
Ozempic comes in pre-filled, single-patient-use, dial-a-dose pens with the following specifications 1:
- Each pen contains 1.5 mL of solution with a total of either 2 mg or 4 mg of semaglutide (depending on pen type)
- Concentration: 1.34 mg of semaglutide per 1 mL 1
- Pens are designed to deliver specific fixed doses (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg depending on the pen variant)
Prescribing Instructions
When ordering Ozempic, you should:
- Prescribe by dose strength and pen type, not by volume
- Specify the maintenance dose (typically 0.5 mg or 1 mg once weekly for diabetes; 2.4 mg for weight management)
- Each pen delivers multiple doses at the specified strength 1
Key Clinical Points
The pen-only formulation is intentional for safety reasons - it minimizes dosing errors that could occur with vial-and-syringe administration 2. This is particularly important for concentrated formulations where volume-based dosing could lead to significant errors.
The pens are designed as single-patient-use devices with built-in dose selectors 1. They come with disposable needles (NovoFine® Plus or NovoFine® needles up to 8 mm length) that must be attached before each injection 1.
Common pitfall to avoid: Never attempt to order Ozempic in vials or by milliliter volume - this formulation does not exist for semaglutide subcutaneous injection. The medication is manufactured and distributed only in pre-filled pen devices 3, 4.
