Taking Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Plavix (clopidogrel) together is not recommended due to a significant drug interaction that can reduce the effectiveness of oseltamivir. According to a study published in The Journal of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics 1, the antiplatelet agent clopidogrel can inhibit the hydrolytic activation of oseltamivir by carboxylesterase human carboxylesterase 1, which is necessary for its therapeutic activity. This means that concurrent use of both drugs can make oseltamivir therapeutically inactive, leaving patients susceptible to influenza infection or a source of spreading the virus.
The mechanism of action of oseltamivir and clopidogrel is different, with oseltamivir inhibiting the influenza virus from spreading within the body and clopidogrel preventing platelets in the blood from sticking together to form clots. However, the interaction between the two drugs can have significant consequences, particularly in patients who require effective treatment for influenza.
It's essential to note that the evidence for this interaction is based on a study published in 2006 1, which found that the hydrolysis of oseltamivir was inhibited by as much as 90% when clopidogrel was present. While more recent studies have evaluated the use of oseltamivir outside of labeled recommendations 2, they do not address the specific interaction between oseltamivir and clopidogrel.
